overview
about wyze air purifier
As a new member of the Wyze environmental product line, the Wyze Air Purifier aims to provide users with a smarter and richer experience. Wyze Air Purifier is empowered by the rule engines, various types of filters, and reliable air quality data extend users' experience to more extensive environmental content. The air purifier will work not only as a remote device but also as a more intelligent device that will help users quickly respond to indoor and outdoor air quality changes.
The design for the Air Purifier product page has been handed off to the dev team and is currently under beta testing. There are also ongoing design iterations and updates.

what i did
As the sole designer for the Air Purifier, I was responsible for creating design solutions for the product page within Wyze app from end to end and providing high-level design feedback on the physical devices.

According to our user survey, 70% of the users have never connected their smart air purifiers to the mobile app. The Wyze air purifier is not just a standalone product; it is also part of the Wyze IoT system. We want to provide additional values through our rule engine and automation. Thus, our primary goal was to encourage users to connect the device with the app by providing intuitive control and experience.
01.
User Research
While understanding who are our users and what they need is the key, I crafted a user survey regarding users' smart air purifier experience and partnered with PM to collect data from potential users. I further developed user groups and use cases to understand what information and actions users need to better utilize the air purifier. I defined what information is unique on the app to encourage users to connect the device with the app.

I regularly shared and synced with PM to ensure we are aligned with refined user groups, users' pain points, use cases, etc.
02.
IA & Key User Flows
After defining user groups and use cases, I created key user flows to visualize and understand users' paths of achieving goals. I also Identified happy paths, edge cases, and troubleshooting paths. With key user flows and goals in mind, I used high-level IA to understand how users may navigate the product page and ensure the hierarchy of features and information we want to provide.

I used user flows as a communication tool with PM to refine PRD, feature definitions, identify potential integration support, and craft a more precise integration plan collaboratively. We prioritized features and divided them into several phrases to fit into the timeline and work with limited resources.
03.
Design Principles
I established design principles for the air purifier to focus on the key users' goals and experiences during the back and forth iterations. It also plays a crucial part in aligning user experience, design goals, and business goals.
Sharing design principles with PM in the early stage has helped us set the right and realistic expectations. From the standpoint of the whole product cycle, developed design principles ensured me to consider the design with a more holistic view which is beneficial for design consistency and long-term development.
04.
Design Handoffs & Iterations
I worked closely with dev teams, product PM, and the platform PM. I provided and organized design handoffs in Figma, which included prototypes for key interactions, annotations, and flows to communicate design solutions. The flows covered setup, main control, settings, and other key experiences that I identified during the user research phase.
I met with PM and the Dev team regularly to workaround technical constraints, understand tradeoffs, and update design accordingly. I provided design audits to the dev team for both alpha and beta versions of the product page.
05.
Moderated Usability Testing
I worked with PM and conducted 5 rapid usability testing using the beta app. I was responsible for preparing tasks, prototypes, scripts and moderating the testing. I designed both closed and open-ended tasks and questions.
The open-ended questions were designed to gather further information about how participants felt about the overall experience and whether they had opinions about specific features. We were able to identify confusion and turn the findings into actionable suggestions for product page iterations.
